Tiled and straightened front steps

tiled front steps

I never thought we’d be so happy to use words like “straight-er” and “level-ish” yet here we are proudly describing the front steps as such. The whole cunning level-then-tile plan worked as we expected and the steps look infinitely better. Great in fact.

We’re fortunate that the casa is a very rustic looking building, though, as there are definiteley some indiosyncracies in the steps that work well with that look. If we ever end up with a midcentury house that really requires sharp edges and exact spacing we won’t try the same solution. We’re actually looking forward to doing the upper set of steps which are already nice and straight and will require much less in the way of creative problem-solving. All in all though, count us completely satisfied with the results. We think the tile really complements the house and the neighbors concur.

We’ve been waffling about what color to paint the buttresses. Initially we were thinking white like traditional stucco walls but we’re now leaning toward something in the brown family. It will hide dirt better and that’s always a plus. Next stage, the patio!

Wow… that looks fantastic, and was a brilliant solution to the crooked step problem. It would be neat if you could put some lights on the buttresses (like they have in movie theatres) to highlight your beautiful tilework.

Right on! The stairs look tremendous and gives me hope that one day I might have the time to deal with the ugly concrete steps running alongside my house – fortunately for us they are not visible to the passerby, just ever present in my brain. Wow, they really look great, and to think they weren’t even level…

I have always been fascinated with the building process to place one’s own “thumbprint” or tatstes on a property. This looks spectacular! Glad to have you Linked!

You gals are doing an amazing job!! Love the pics; keep them coming!

Although, I will admit looking at all your accomplishments makes me feel a little guilty for still having a few boxes stuck in the corner nook where visitors can see them… (blushing) ;o)

Can’t wait to see what else you have up your sleeve!

The finished stairs look great. I vote for the brown too (do you like the way I think I should get to vote? Pushy, huh? It’s the New Yorker in me), because either color works, but white is SO high maintainence.
