I never thought we’d be so happy to use words like “straight-er” and “level-ish” yet here we are proudly describing the front steps as such. The whole cunning level-then-tile plan worked as we expected and the steps look infinitely better. Great in fact.
We’re fortunate that the casa is a very rustic looking building, though, as there are definiteley some indiosyncracies in the steps that work well with that look. If we ever end up with a midcentury house that really requires sharp edges and exact spacing we won’t try the same solution. We’re actually looking forward to doing the upper set of steps which are already nice and straight and will require much less in the way of creative problem-solving. All in all though, count us completely satisfied with the results. We think the tile really complements the house and the neighbors concur.
We’ve been waffling about what color to paint the buttresses. Initially we were thinking white like traditional stucco walls but we’re now leaning toward something in the brown family. It will hide dirt better and that’s always a plus. Next stage, the patio!

Sorry for the sad lack of updates on the house lately. We’ve been under the weather for the past 2 weeks which has put hardcore house projects low on the priority list. It also really slowed down the production of my Halloween decorations. I’d meant to have them installed over a week ago but only got them in place on Friday.

The headstones are just cut out of sheet foam insulation. Super easy. There are a gazillion sets of directions on the web. I thought the little black fence was a super original use for some PVC but a little looking around on the internet showed me that I was about the gazillionth person to think of it. Ah well. I still like the way it turned out. Spooky cottage is all set for All Hallows. All we have left to do is carve the pumpkins but since it was in the 80s all weekend, we decided to put it off until closer to the 31st so the jack o’ lanterns don’t rot in the heat. If you feel the need to add some spookiness to your own place, you can’t go wrong with the monster list for ideas and how-tos.
